The Temple of Time

The Temple of Time, Illustration
The Temple of Time
“The flow of time is always cruel… its speed seems different for each person, but no one can change it… A thing that doesn’t change with time is a memory of younger days.” – Sheik, ‘Ocarina of Time’

The Temple of Time has been featured in many of the ‘Legend of Zelda’ games serving a variety of purposes. However, the one thing that has remained consistent is its origin. It is a place of worship of the goddess Hylia who watches over the land of Hyrule. In ‘Breath of the Wild’ (BOTW) the temple is in ruin, a shell of its former glory. Despite its run-down appearance, it is still a sacred place. Its presence has always demanded a kind of humble reverence from the character, Link, and the player alike. I hoped to capture its magnificence in this piece.
I made this design for my ART 1200 InDesign Software class. We were asked to design a poster using only two hues and at least two tints of each hue. I went with a dark blue and a bright green to simulate the dark of night lit by moonlight and firefly light alone. The text framing the design is in the Sheikah font, which is the ancient language of the Sheikah tribe in ‘Breath of the Wild’. This ancient text is found on many artifacts and shrines throughout Hyrule. It has become a staple of the BOTW game so naturally, I wanted to incorporate it in this piece.
The Temple of Time has always been one of my favorite sites in the Zelda franchise. I have never considered myself particularly spiritual, but the peace and serenity provided in this space makes me think that I could be.
